Founded in 1873 as Birmingham's first Black church. The 1963 bombing of the basement during Sunday school took the lives of Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Carol Denise McNair, and accelerated passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Still an active congregation and pilgrimage site.
