Born Gloria Jean Watkins in 1952 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Authored over 30 books between 1981 and her 2021 death, taught at Yale, Oberlin, and Berea, and built the bell hooks center at Berea College. The lowercase signature was a deliberate refusal of authorial ego.
