Born in Montgomery County, Mississippi in 1917. Sterilized without consent during a 1961 hospital visit and beaten in a Winona jail for organizing voter registration. Hamer co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party that challenged the all-white state delegation at the 1964 convention.
