Harriet Tubman

Born enslaved as Araminta Ross in Dorchester County, Maryland around 1822. Escaped in 1849, then returned to Maryland 13 times to lead family and strangers north. Served as a Union Army scout and was the first woman to lead an armed assault on the Confederacy.
