Ida B. Wells

Anti-lynching journalist, suffragist, and co-founder of the NAACP whose Memphis newspaper exposed the true motives behind mob lynchings in the 1890s.

Born enslaved in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1862. Wells's investigative reporting in the Memphis Free Speech proved that lynching targeted Black economic success more than the alleged crimes, and she carried that documentation into a global campaign that put lynching on the world's conscience.
