John Lewis

SNCC chair, Freedom Rider, and 17-term US Congressman from Atlanta who led the march beaten back at the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Born in Troy, Alabama in 1940. Lewis was one of the original 13 Freedom Riders, organized the lunch-counter sit-ins in Nashville, and was the youngest speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. Represented Georgia's 5th district from 1987 until his death in 2020.
