Born in 1928 in St. Louis. Angelou's 1969 memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings broke ground as the first nonfiction bestseller by a Black woman; she went on to author seven autobiographies, several poetry collections, and the Clinton inaugural poem "On the Pulse of Morning."
