Born 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Du Bois moved to Atlanta University in 1897 and spent 13 years there producing the first sociological field study of Black America. His feud with Booker T. Washington over accommodation vs. agitation defined early-20th-century Black political thought.
