Daughters of the Dust

Julie Dash's 1991 film about a Gullah Geechee family on the Sea Islands of South Carolina at the turn of the 20th century.

The first feature by a Black woman director to receive a theatrical release in the US. Restored by the Cohen Film Collection and added to the National Film Registry in 2004; Beyoncé's Lemonade explicitly cites its imagery.
