Ralph Ellison — Invisible Man

1952 novel that opens at a Southern Black college modeled on Tuskegee and ends in a Harlem coal cellar.

Won the 1953 National Book Award. The novel braids surreal Black college politics, sharecropping memory, and Harlem riots into one of the most cited American works of the 20th century.
