Toni Morrison — Song of Solomon

1977 novel that opens with a man leaping from a Mercy Hospital roof in Michigan but ends with a Black flying myth tracing back to Shalimar, Virginia.

Morrison's third novel and first New York Times bestseller. Won the National Book Critics Circle Award. The novel inspired Barack Obama's reading list and helped earn Morrison the Nobel Prize in Literature.
