Sleep first
Sleep when the baby sleeps. The first 6 weeks are an endurance contest, not a sprint.
The Black-specific issues
Newborn screening, vitamin D supplementation, and pediatrician selection. Black babies should be screened for sickle cell — it's routine but follow up if the result is positive.
Find a Black pediatrician
Health Equity Matters Pediatrics Network, the Black Doctor's Hub directory, and HBCU medical school alumni networks. Establishing care with a Black ped pediatrician can reduce dismissal of Black-mom concerns.
Postpartum support
The Black mother in your life needs more support than American culture acknowledges. Cook, clean, take the baby for night feedings, and protect her from extended family chaos.
