Black Mental Health: Find a Therapist Who Gets It

Directories, sliding-scale options, and what to look for in a culturally competent therapist.

Directories

Therapy for Black Girls (therapyforblackgirls.com), Therapy for Black Men (therapyforblackmen.org), Black Mental Health Alliance (blackmentalhealth.com), and Inclusive Therapists all let you filter by race, gender, and state. Psychology Today's directory also supports filtering by race.

Sliding scale + free

Open Path Collective ($30–80 sessions). Many states' 211 lines connect you to community mental-health centers. The Loveland Foundation funds therapy for Black women and girls. The Boris L. Henson Foundation does referrals plus crisis support.

What to look for

A first session is a screening for both of you. Ask: have you worked with Black clients on (your specific issue)? How do you handle conversations about race in therapy? Trust your gut on whether they listened or projected.

It's a process

The first therapist isn't always the one. It's normal to try two or three before finding someone you click with.
