Junior year — spring
Take the ACT or SAT. Most HBCUs are test-optional but submitting a score can unlock merit scholarships at FAMU, Howard, Hampton, and Morgan State. Aim for 1100+ SAT or 23+ ACT to be competitive for aid.
Senior year — fall
The Common Black College Application covers 65 HBCUs with one $20 fee. File the FAFSA on Oct 1 — earlier the better. Some HBCUs award aid first-come-first-served.
Senior year — winter
Apply to scholarships specific to HBCU students: UNCF, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, Tom Joyner Foundation, Coca-Cola First Generation. Most have January or February deadlines.
Choose smart
Compare net cost (not sticker price). Smaller HBCUs like Tougaloo, Lane, and Bennett often offer better aid packages than the big names for the same academic profile.
