Plant a Survival Garden for Hurricane Season

Gardening through Southern hurricane and storm season.

What to plant

Storm-resilient crops: sweet potatoes, okra, cowpeas, cassava, perennial greens like sorrel. They survive heavy rain better than tomatoes or peppers.

When to plant

Plant after July 1 to avoid the heaviest hurricane window. Most quick-cycle crops (3-month harvest) will be ready by October.

Protect your soil

Mulch heavily. Hurricane rain compacts and erodes uncovered soil. Six inches of straw or pine needles around plants helps.

Storm prep

Stake tall plants. Move container crops to a sheltered wall. Harvest anything that's ready before the storm.
