Screenshot every text, save every email, keep every voicemail. Write down dates, times, and witnesses for every in-person conversation.
File with HUD first
One-year window from the date of the discrimination. The complaint is free at hud.gov/fairhousing. HUD will investigate and, in many cases, mediate a settlement.
State agencies
Georgia Commission on Equal Opportunity, North Carolina Human Relations Commission, and Louisiana Commission on Human Rights all run parallel state investigations.
Get a fair-housing lawyer
The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund both run referral programs. Many cases are taken on contingency.
