The community economy

Wiki Token is the working name for black.wiki's points economy. Right now it lives in our database as a running balance on your profile — not on a blockchain (yet). The mechanics are the same either way: you earn by contributing, you spend on things the community values.

How you earn today

Every point in your balance came from an action recorded with a source and a reason. You can see your own history on /account and the top contributors on /leaderboard.

What you can spend on

Featured slots and the community marketplace are live. The on-chain token graduation is the only remaining step on the roadmap.

Phase 2 · Feature your stuff

Live

Spend points to put your app, directory listing, or playbook into the Featured slot on its category page for 1 day, 1 week, or 1 month. Stacks if you buy more while already featured. Open the edit page of any listing you own to see the price tiers — events are cheap (short-lived), businesses cost more (evergreen exposure).

Phase 3 · Community marketplace

Live

The Yard is open. Spend points to redeem admin-curated items, or post your own — community members can list things they want to pass on, and other members claim them with their points. Donors can run a queue, accept custom point offers, and pick who gets the item; losing offers are auto-refunded. Real value flowing between contributors, not just numbers on a leaderboard.

Phase 4 · On-chain Wiki Token

When it makes sense

Once the off-chain economy has real volume and clear utility, the token graduates to its own ledger so balances are portable, auditable, and not solely controlled by us. We're deliberately not racing to launch a token before it does anything — the points need to earn their utility first.

FAQ

Is this crypto?

Not yet. Today Wiki Token is a number on your profile maintained by a database trigger. We chose to build the economy first and the chain later — the inverse of how most projects start.

Can I lose points?

Through spending — featured slots and Yard redemptions — and through donations: posting a Yard item costs a small submit fee that scales with the contributor count. Awards aren't clawed back retroactively unless an action that earned them gets reversed (e.g. a publish that was actually spam getting removed by admins).

Can I transfer points to someone else?

Indirectly — through The Yard. You post an item, another member redeems it with their points, and your balance grows. Direct peer-to-peer tipping isn't wired up yet; that's the next thing on the list once we see how the Yard volume settles.

Will admins manually grant points?

For exceptional contributions, yes — with a public reason on your account log so the audit trail stays clean. Routine earning paths cover the common cases.
